Sarah Rose, a former slave woman, has a strong history with the Honey Fork plantation. The cursed plantation is plagued with death. Sarah Rose plays a major role in each of these events. She is woman in chains who searches her entire life for freedom and tries to work her way through the concept of when is freedom really "free". Always on the run, this novel is about freedom, survival, and basic human emotions. It is a mix of drama, history, and suspense with a little of the supernatural to tickle the reader's senses.

The author shared a copy of this book with me one day as I visited her business. But, she explained that she was embarassed because after printing, she discovered several grammatical errors. She was correct, but.....the story is very engaging and interesting. I did not want to put it down.Set in the South just prior to the Civil War, it follows the life of a young black girl. The slave families have dug out an series of underground rooms and tunnels beneath their compound and between the master's house. The story proceeds though the war and a bit following.
Then time switches to 2012 with some young ghost hunters researching the mansion and the tunnels to find the history of the plantation for an investor who wants to reopen the mansion. CJ now introduces a touch of the paranormal in the story when Sarah Rose's essence follows and finally guides the researchers.
I was sad to have the story end and hope that Cunningham has ideas for a follow-up story. I am now reading her two other books.
